The Story Of Cernunnos

A Brief Background Of The Horned God

This man of many names was said to be born on the darkest day of the year (the Winter Solstice) - CERNUNNOS - of Ancient mythology, is known as the Lord Of The Forest, reigning over the natural world, and often times seen surrounded by the animals he loves + protects. He is the embodiment of masculinity and male energy - and, as such - the God of fertility.

As the Forest God (sometimes known as The Green Man), he is depicted with stag antlers, which sometimes cause him to be mistaken for Satan, (of Christian mythology). Cernunnos actually predates the Christian "devil" to around 400BC. Yes - Cernunnos, in fact, is older than Christianity, and certainly not to be feared.

As the God of the Underworld, he has another name: The Dark Man. In the Underworld, Cernunnos sings to the dead, and brings them comfort and protection, as they make their way to the Summerland. He teaches us to embrace life and death equally, as it is a part of the natural world.
